WRC Ireland Bid Gains Momentum

In a bid to bring one of motorsport's most prestigious events to Irish soil, Ireland is actively pursuing a spot on the World Rally Championship (WRC) calendar, with the goal of securing a date in 2026.

This significant move, backed by Motorsport Ireland and led by President Aiden Harper, has garnered substantial support within the motorsport community. The proposal, currently with the Major Bids Department, awaits a government decision on funding—a crucial factor in making Ireland's vision a reality.

Speaking on the bid’s progress, Harper shared that discussions with the government have been promising. “We’re in a very positive dialogue"

Securing the required funding is no simple task, as Harper acknowledges, describing it as “a long process.” However, he expressed optimism that the government will finalise its funding decision soon.

With mounting anticipation, Motorsport Ireland is eager to lock in a 2026 start date, and plans to host the WRC until 2028. “The urgency is there,” Harper emphasized. “To be included on the 2026 WRC calendar, we need to secure a date soon, ensuring Ireland’s place in this high-profile championship for multiple years.”

The WRC promoter has already voiced strong support for the Irish bid, recognising the country’s rich rallying history and passionate fanbase. Bringing the championship to Ireland would not only align with the WRC’s goal of expanding into new regions but also capitalise on Ireland’s scenic landscapes, providing a unique backdrop for the world’s top rally drivers.

If successful, the bid would mark a historic moment for Irish motorsport, positioning Ireland as a top-tier destination on the international rallying stage. Harper and his team remain hopeful, seeing this as a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to embed Ireland firmly in the WRC circuit.
