WORLD RALLY CHAMPIONSHIP

What Next For The WRC?

Rallying, like many motorsport disciplines, can face challenges and changes over time. Shifts in driver participation, concerns about formats and rally lengths, and other factors are not uncommon in the world of Rallying.

With at least half of next year's World Rally Championship crews on a part-time program, the landscape of the competition seems to be undergoing a significant shift. What could be on the horizon next?

Hyundai drivers Thierry Neuville and Ott Tänak have expressed concerns about potential larger issues following the announcement that Kalle Rovanperä will also step back from a full-time program for 2024, Citing the demanding WRC schedule as the main factor in his decision.

Esapekka Lappi, Rovanperä's compatriot is also opting for a part-time program, speculates that burnout might be a decisive factor. Lappi wonders if Rovanperä's decision is an attempt to highlight the need for a potential redesign in the World Rally Championship.

Certainly, the sight of the reigning WRC champion, especially one as young as Rovanperä, stepping back due to the demanding nature at the top level is not a favorable reflection on the championship. However, there is optimism that this situation could lead to positive developments for the overall direction of the championship.

Additionally, Rovanperä's decision further underscores the shortage of top-tier full-time drivers with the capability to win rallies. This issue not only requires attention but is also interconnected with the scarcity of seats at the highest level.

The World motorsport council are due to convene next month with a focus on the direction of the championship moving forward, Cost, Format and attracting new manufacturers will be at the forefront of any discussions.
